Vulnerability Analysis of Structural Systems under Extreme Flood Events

چکیده

Vulnerability analyses of coastal or inland bridges in terms flood actions and structural fluid flow characteristics are carried out. In particular, a numerical model based on two-phase is implemented for the multiphase system, whereas three-dimensional formulation shell/volume finite elements adopted structure. The governing equations can simulate interaction between fluids structures, by using Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) strategy. results hydrodynamic forces, bridge displacements dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) show that existing formulas, available literature design codes, do not accurately predict maximum effects. For investigated cases, DAFs may vary from 1 to 4.5. worst scenarios observed upload vertical direction. Finally, performance protection fairing system investigated. such devices able efficiently reduce effects wave load applied hydraulic forces structure deformability, with 40% more accuracy than unprotected configuration.

Flood Risk from Extreme Events

There is increasing evidence that more frequent flooding resulting from increases in the frequency and intensity of storms are likely to be one consequence of anthropogenic climate change in many parts of the world including the United Kingdom. Flooding in the UK is currently a major and costly environmental hazard with annual damage from floods of around £1 billion at present levels of protect...

The Response of Fluvial Systems to Large Flood Events

In the summer of 2001, an intense thunderstorm in southeastern Caspian Sea triggered a catastrophic flood in the Madarsoo basin . Use of methods including high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite images interpretation, multi-date mapping, hydraulic calculations and field observations made possible the documentation of the geomorphic impacts on the Madarsoo River and its tributaries. Geo...

Population movement under extreme events.

T he last century has witnessed the fastest population growth in human history, with the result that, for the first time, more than 50% of the world population lives in cities. This process is still advancing. According to United Nations predictions, urban population will exceed 75% of the world’s population by 2070. Furthermore, estimates are that if the current trends continue, by the end of ...

Risk of Extreme Events Under Nonstationary Conditions

The concept of the return period is widely used in the analysis of the risk of extreme events and in engineering design. For example, a levee can be designed to protect against the 100-year flood, the flood which on average occurs once in 100 years. Use of the return period typically assumes that the probability of occurrence of an extreme event in the current or any future year is the same. Ho...
